Mountain of Fire: The Discovery of the Real Mount Sinai

Mountain of Fire: The Discovery of the Real Mount Sinai (2002)

The exact location of Mount Sinai has eluded archeologists and theologians for centuries. It is the mountain of legend chronicled in the Old Testament book of Exodus. The mountain where Moses saw the glory of the God of the Hebrews, fell to his knees in fear before a burning bush and received the stone tablets containing Holy law etched by the finger of God.

Tradition has placed this holey mountain squarely in the middle of the Egyptian Sinai peninsula, but two unlikely teams of adventurers made a different discovery. This is the remarkable true story of their journey. A dangerous mission, leading them to the barren deserts of Saudi Arabia and to a mysterious blackened peak surrounded by high barbed-wire fences and patrolled by armed guards. Smuggled out at great risk, their startling evidence has the potential to shock the world and rewrite history.

Buy Mountain of Fire: The Discovery of the Real Mount Sinai

This is an extremely interesting documentary about the search for the real Mount Sinai in the book of Exodus in the Bible. The evidence they found is amazing and compelling, and the site is not on the Sinai Peninsula as is listed on most biblical maps. The video is very well done and answers a lot of age old questions with real evidence. It totally coroborates the Exodus story, including the parting of the Red Sea story in an almost Indiana Jones-type adventure. Presented in a non-sectarian way, it's a must see for Jews, Christians and anyone interested in archaeology and history. Fascinating!

DVD David Gilmour in Concert - Live at Robert Wayatt's Meltdown

David Gilmour in Concert - Live at Robert Wayatt's Meltdown (2002)

There was a time when I went nowhere without a Pink Floyd album close at hand. "The Wall" and "The Final Cut" formed the crux of my listening habits for nearly two years back in the days when such things mattered more than they do now. Eventually, I picked up every Pink Floyd album I could lay my hands on, along with solo albums from Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Syd Barrett. Probably the capper of my Pink Floyd listening days was finally getting to see them live in 1994. I don't listen to this stuff as much as I once did, but anytime I get a chance to check out something new I usually do it. That is why I decided to watch "David Gilmour in Concert," a collection of concert footage shot between 2001 and 2002 in London's Royal Festival Hall. There are no fireworks, no huge video screens, and no massive sound system belting out the hits to tens of thousands of people here. Instead, you just get Dave along with a small group of musicians and a few backup singers. Those used to seeing Gilmour blasting out Pink Floyd hits with the rest of the band--sans Roger Waters, of course--will still enjoy how effortlessly he cranks out the music in a much smaller venue than he is probably used to playing.

Ancient Rome: A New History

Ancient Rome: A New History (Paperback)

A highly readable new history of Rome from its origins to the reign of Justinian.
How did the Roman world develop from a small number of people living on the banks of the Tiber to an empire encompassing some sixty-four million people spread from one end of the Mediterranean to the other? How did the Romans themselves understand this development, and did that understanding evolve over time?

Incorporating contributions from economics, archaeology, anthropology, and literary criticism, David Potter’s thought-provoking and accessible text shows students how Roman history works. The book is beautifully illustrated with maps, battle plans, portraits, paintings, sculpture, and more, and includes many quotes from original sources.

Buy Ancient Rome: A New History

This Potter book is a crash course in Ancient Rome. That description is a bit of a double-edged sword. There's a lot of material here, but very little depth. As a man fascinated with the history of the ancient world, I found the book sorely lacking in detail and analysis. Potter's book is what it is--a very general overview of the "entirety" of Roman history. It's something of an introductory tour of Roman history that, to the unfamiliar, is quite serviceable, but for those acquainted with the subject it is somewhat lacking.

If you're unfamiliar with Roman history, this is a worthwhile read. If you are more like me, however, and know which bank of the Rubicon is which, this is a textbook to avoid.

I really liked the previews on this dvd. Mulan 2 is a great one, and so is Mary Poppins. Home on the Range is ok. There is also a preview for the Brother Bear dvd, but it is almost the same as the original theatrical preview. It also has the "hot tub" trailer from Lion King 1.5.

I really like this show, however, with the new remastering the music is so loud that it is very hard to hear the actors. In the comments, etc., it is hard to understand what is being said when the actors have an accent. These DVD's were released after 2000 so there should have been no reason why there was no CC or subtitles. Movies and TV shows from earlier than 2000 and when CC was not common are able to have these options and with the large fan base it's a shame that these were left out. 5 stars for shows and 0 stars for no CC.

I took my 4-year-old and 7-year-old girls to see this at the theater. It is great that the movie teaches that you can't get what you want from just wishing on a star. The movie has outstanding visuals, too, and many funny moments. IMO, however, many of the songs are just so-so. Both of my daughters absolutely loved it, more than Enchanted, more than Sleeping Beauty and more than Snow White. For my kids it ranks up there with Beauty and the Beast.

Buy Alice in Wonderland (2-Disc Special Un-Anniversary Edition)

Because of critics' reaction to Alice in Wonderland in 1951, it is written, Walt Disney actually apologized for the movie and soon after his television show became a hit a few years later, he showed it in its entirety on TV, thus relegating it to his "minor film" category. The movie has never been able to shake this image, and that is a shame. We should remember that "Wizard of Oz" wasn't a giant box office hit in 1939, and only after it was made an annual event on television did it become a classic in the eyes of the public. "Alice in Wonderland" deserves far more attention than it has ever received. The characters are wonderful. The music is humable, even singable. It's a short film that takes the viewer into a dreamland, and Disney's animated version stands up against any of the other live versions that have popped up over the years. It's time to give this movie the credit it deserves as a classic in animation. Watch it from a child's point of view, with the amazing images of a cat that disappears, talking cards, and Alice constantly growing and shrinking. And then enjoy it as an adult for the dream world into which we are all swept. And furthermore, the DVD transfer is fantastic, with as many extras as one will find on a Disney non-special edition disc. Take another look at this one and be swept away.

DVD Escanaba in da Moonlight

As a native of Michigan, this movie was a must for my DVD collection. I hadn't seen it, but felt it was my obligation to buy Escanaba in da Moonlight - even if it ended up being terrible. Boy I'm glad I did!

It is a film that pokes some good-hearted fun at the people who live in the upper peninsula (Yoopers!) as well as deer hunters. As a person whose lifestyle is antipodal to the whole "outdoorsman / sportsman" scene, this was quite a comical story. Not one I could really "relate" to, mind you, but jovial nonetheless. In between the Jimmer and the DNR man you're sure to have a smile on your face by the time the closing credits come up.

As others have likely mentioned, this feature gets pretty strange (to say the least). In fact, the subtitle could have been "HUNTING TRIP OF THE ABSURD." But just remember - it's all in good fun. This is not the type of film that would even try to win any awards. If Samuel Beckett were a hunter, he would have loved this movie. In fact, if Beckett had been a Michigander, he might have WRITTEN Escanaba in da Moonlights movie!
